Geosciences Visualization
For several years, members of the VyGLab together with an interdisciplinary group composed of professionals in Computer Science and Geological Sciences, have been working on topics related to Data Visualization applied to Geosciences. This interdisciplinary group is composed by researchers from the Institute of Computer Graphics and Algorithms of the Technical University of Vienna (TU-Wien), the VRVis Research Center of Vienna and the INGEOSUR, Instituto UNS-CONICET.
The work developed by geologists, both in the field and in the laboratory, involves great challenges in terms of the processing and analysis of the data obtained in each of these contexts. Geologists analyze large volumes of data from geochemical analyzes. These analyzes generate a large number of attributes for each analysis and have associated characteristic spatial domains such as prisms or tetrahedra.
Due to the different characteristics of the data involved, there is no single visual metaphor that can satisfy all analytical needs. For this reason, it is very useful to have a set of visual metaphors and associated visualization techniques to analyze these data. These representations must be able to effectively communicate the characteristics of the information space as well as encourage discovery.
In this context, we are working on the advance to the knowledge on the topic of visual analysis of multidimensional data constituted principal, although not exclusively, by geochemical, isotopic, petrological, mineralogical and structural data.
